New 3D scanners at Dubai Airport promise faster, stress-free security checks
Advanced security rollout to be complete across terminals by May 2026
DUBAI – Passengers flying through Dubai International Airport may soon breeze through security without removing laptops or liquids from their bags.
Advanced 3D baggage scanners, already being introduced at Terminal 3, will be installed across all terminals by May 2026, according to Emarat Al Youm.
Officials say the technology, designed to generate high-resolution 3D images, will allow checks to be carried out more quickly while maintaining stringent safety standards. “This will significantly speed up screening, reduce waiting times and enhance security,” said Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer of Dubai Airports.

The scanners, supplied by Smiths Detection under a contract awarded in May 2025, mark one of the largest overhauls of security systems at the world’s busiest hub for international travellers. They eliminate the need for passengers to take out electronics, perfumes, creams, or liquids over 100ml at checkpoints.
Essa Al Shamsi, senior vice president for terminal operations, explained that around 140 machines will be replaced, requiring major infrastructure work across all terminals.
How will it help?
Dubai Airports believes the technology will make travel smoother and more convenient, especially with passenger numbers climbing to record highs. The airport handled 46 million travellers in the first half of 2025, a 2.3 percent increase from the same period last year. The second quarter alone saw 22.5 million guests, up 3.1 percent, while April was the busiest on record with 8 million passengers.
To manage this surge, the airport is also trialling AI-powered systems that predict passenger flows up to 24 hours in advance, allowing staff to be redeployed during peak times. Additionally, biometric “red carpet” corridors are set to debut at Terminal 3, enabling up to 10 passengers at a time to clear immigration in seconds without presenting documents.
When will it be ready?
The rollout of 3D scanners is currently under way at Terminal 3, used exclusively by Emirates. Full installation across all three terminals is scheduled for completion by May 2026. Al Shamsi highlighted the scale of the project: “That’s huge, which requires a bit of infrastructure change; hence, it will take time to complete it.”
